A Traveler's Memories

Don Pepe Estate Coffee: Mountain Views and a Warm Welcome in Boquete

Sometimes a trip begins with a familiar scent. Freshly brewed coffee can bring back a conversation, a kitchen, or an ordinary morning we hadn’t realized we missed.

In Boquete, that scent leads you closer to its source. A visit to Don Pepe Estate Coffee reveals how much landscape, family history, and everyday care can find their way into a single cup.
The coffee drew me in. The mountains and the warmth of the welcome made the experience stay with me.

1. Mountain Views Worth Slowing Down For

In Volcancito, on the slopes of Barú Volcano, coffee grows within a landscape that deserves your full attention. The estate sits at elevations ranging from roughly 4,900 to 6,600 feet, in the highlands of Boquete.

I was captivated by the views of Barú and the surrounding mountain range. I had come ready to learn, but there were moments when I simply wanted to pause and take it all in.
When work often travels with you, those moments feel especially welcome: putting away your phone, letting the next task wait, and noticing where you are.

2. A Family Story Still Taking Shape

Don Pepe Estate Coffee traces its family coffee-growing history to 1898. Knowing that adds another dimension to the visit. The coffee fields become part of a story that is still being written.

I’m drawn to places where tradition remains part of daily life. Here, it continues through growing and caring for coffee, processing the beans, and welcoming visitors who want to understand the work.
Learning about a destination through a family’s livelihood brings you closer to it. The scenery gains meaning, and the place begins to feel more familiar.

3. Discovering the Work Behind Your Morning Coffee

The tour follows coffee from cultivation to the cup, introducing the varieties and processes that shape it along the way. Drying is part of that story—a stage most of us rarely consider when ordering our morning coffee.

What interested me most was connecting the coffee plants with what I would later taste. Each explanation gave me another reason to pay attention.
You don’t need a trained palate to enjoy the experience. Curiosity and an appreciation for a good cup are a lovely place to start.

4. A Tasting That Deserves Your Time

The tasting brought the visit together. After walking through the estate and learning about its processes, the coffee felt connected to a place and to the people who care for it.

I loved its quality. Rather than reaching for elaborate tasting language, I wanted to take my time, return to the aroma, and notice what lingered after each sip.
Some experiences leave us with a simple gift: a greater appreciation for something we already enjoyed.

5. The Welcome You Carry Home

The mountains were beautiful, and the coffee won me over. But the hospitality was what touched me most: the kind of warmth that makes you comfortable asking questions and taking your time.

It’s the same quality I value in a memorable hotel stay. You sense that the people welcoming you care about the experience you’re having. At a coffee estate, that warmth makes learning feel like a shared pleasure.
My favorite part of the memory is that it holds more than excellent coffee. It also holds the feeling of being warmly received.

Make Room for a Slower Morning

With Barú, the mountain range, and the coffee fields as its setting, this experience brings together so much of what I enjoy about travel: scenery, history, local flavors, and human connection.

I’d make room for it during a stay in Boquete, leaving enough time to explore, ask questions, and enjoy the tasting. It could be a morning shared with friends or a welcome pause between workdays and new places.
Some cups of coffee brighten a few minutes. Others help you remember an entire place long after you’ve returned home.
